Ottawa is located on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation on the banks of the river they called the Kichi Sibi. It is called the Ottawa now, and though it has been heavily dammed along its course, it remains a grand river steeped in history.

Ottawa Trans History

Ottawa’s trans history is an ongoing project of this web site. I am grateful for the contributions many trans people have made to my initial research. They have not only added to the original material, but also ensured its accuracy.

Nonetheless, I am certain this history is incomplete. If you are aware of events that are not recorded, please let me know.

Our history is important. It’s a powerful antidote to the attempted erasure of trans lives and it celebrates our achievements.

OTTAWA TRANS LIBRARY

I have been adding material to the Ottawa Trans Library in the belief that once this damn pandemic ends I’ll get it out of my basement and installed somewhere where the community can access it. The collection finally has a proper library catalogue. I’ve added 109 books so far (out of about 125 items). To browse the catalogue go to: https://otranslib.librarika.com/search

Click on the ‘Top Collections’ tab to see everything I’ve added so far. (Click on ‘title” to organize the list alphabetically.)

A library is more than just a place for learning and entertainment. It is a community builder.

Some publications from the library are available in PDF format. These include the Gender Mosaic newsletter Notes from the Underground, the ‘zine Triple Echo, and the booklets Drag Queen and Transvestism. See the Digital Archives page.
