Ottawa is located on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation on the banks of the river they called the Kichi Sibi (now called the Ottawa).

OTTAWA TRANS LIBRARY

The Ottawa Trans Library is located at 1104 Somerset St. W. in Hintonburg. It is a lending library of trans books and material, and a community space for trans and gender non-conforming people, as well as the LGBTQ+ community. Hours are: Saturday and Sunday 12 to 5, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 3 to 7.

In addition to regular hours, the library hosts regular and special events. Board Game Night happens every second Thursday.

Visit the Library site for more info.

For general information on the library visit the Ottawa Trans Library page on this site.

The library has a new online catalogue that better serves our growing collection. It can be viewed at: https://www.librarycat.org/lib/otttranslib

Some publications from the library are available in PDF format. These include the Gender Mosaic newsletter Notes from the Underground, the ‘zine Triple Echo, and the booklets Drag Queen and Transvestism. See the Digital Archives page.

Ottawa Trans History

Although Ottawa’s trans history was the original reason for this web site, this ongoing project has stalled.

If you are aware of events that are not recorded, please let me know.

Our history is important. It’s a powerful antidote to the attempted erasure of trans lives and it celebrates our achievements.

Directory of Canadian Trans Activists

I sometimes feel I’ve bitten off more than I can chew with this directory, but it’s a small way to recognize some of the people who have helped secure rights and dignity for Canadian trans people. Consequently, I’ll continue adding bios in my own haphazard way and beg the indulgence of deserving individuals who are not represented here. The directory is currently composed of 23 brief biographies. The Directory of Canadian Trans Activists.
